      More tips coming soon!
May/June 2006

After a dreary and wet winter, spring has arrived.  If you’re like me then you’ve been planning all winter to get outside and start those “yard projects”.   Last month you would have potentially got a start, but the rain persisted and with its persistence the excitement grew to get outside, and of coarse the unrealistic dread that it could rain clear to July!!!  But that hasn’t happened and it’s time to get started.

Creating spaces with specific functions and goals in our landscape is important.  Flagstone patios, winding paths, stone benches, and the sound of water over rock all bring different results for each of us.  Creating those things that you find most appealing in a landscape are worth the thought and time to see done in your own garden.  If you think your hopes are out of reach, whether that be because of a hectic schedule or a small budget then think through your goals and start with small doable pieces.  If the whole idea is just plain overwhelming then think about consulting a local landscape designer to help you come up with a plan.  Once you have a plan you can proceed yourself or have a licensed landscape company help you.

I want to mention a helpful tip that can bring drastic changes to any landscape and is easy to implement, and hopefully help you create more beauty and enjoyment in your yard.

Trees…They could possible be one of the best and simple answers to beautifying an area there is.  Whether it be replacing a tree or adding a new one, because of the vast selection and variety of trees available you can find a tree that fits almost any area.  From dwarf trees to large shade trees you can find the right one to change the feel of an entire area. Trees in a landscape have the incredible ability to create there own ambience.  Think of the blazing maple in fall or the color of a tree in bloom or the beauty of an evergreen.   Trees put in the right place do wonders in a landscape.

Important things to consider in choosing the right tree for your specific area are:
Growth habit, sun or shade needs,  make sure the soil is adequate (amend and condition if need be), Make sure the tree is proportionate to the space your planting it in, some trees are very messy so check into the specific tree before you plant,  I recommend buying mature trees that you can enjoy immediately in your landscape. For example if purchasing a Red Maple try to buy one that is already six to eight feet high, as it is well worth spending the extra money.

Planting a tree may sound simple but I’ve found it to be one of the best ways to enhance an outdoor area and an essential piece to creating a beautiful landscape.
