There’s nothing better than a fireplace – indoors or outdoors!
Creating an outdoor area where friends and family can gather to relax or a place to simply sit back and enjoy the warm ambience that a fire brings is becoming more popular every year.
An outdoor fire place or firepit can define a space and create a gathering spot and bring the excitement of a camp fire right to your own patio or outdoor living space.
There are several options in terms of style, material and location when deciding what you want in an out door fire pit. Over the years, some of my clients have preferred burning wood to create a more authentic experience. For others, a cleaner burning, natural gas fire pit is the best choice.
Adding a fire pit can be as simple as buying a copper or metal fire ring or as involved as a mortared-in rock, brick or block to accomplish the style you want.
The benefits of the more natural open wood fire pit is the authentic campfire experience - the drawback is the smoke.
The natural gas fire pit is clean, smoke free and can be started with a lighter or match - the drawback can be the initial cost of installation.
The functional similarities of and indoor and outdoor fireplace or fire pit are very similar. Many people prefer the gas because they don’t want to deal with the mess of a wood burning option or create wood smoke.
If you decide to go with the rock, brick or block style, choose something that flows with the style of your home and outdoor living space. I’ve found natural rock to be a popular choice with clients when constructing fire pits. The inner fire pit is constructed with a ‘fire’ brick. The outside of the fire pit is constructed with a natural rock and capped with a matching flagstone on the top. It’s a natural and rich look that enhances any outdoor environment.
If your looking to add an wonderful, affordable outdoor feature to your yard or patio, an outdoor fireplace or fire pit is a great option that you and friends will enjoy for years to come.
